![]() If there are things you really struggle with post them up here. You might not be able to use them but they still help in understanding things better! It's triangles all the way down from here on out.įor tests/quizzes write cheatsheets. Personally I don't really like using Method of Sections much, Hanson can explain much better. You isolate a truss to around three members to and solve the equation that isolates one variable first, so that you can solve the whole equation. Method of sections is similar in concept. Usually your moment equations should be chosen so that it isolates one variable in an easy to solve equation, then you can solve the above using what you find in the moment equations. Three equations means at a maximum you can only have 3 unknowns. You have the sum of forces in the X, Y, and Moment about a point. Remember, you only have 3 Equations for solving equilibrium of forces. That was something that would've helped me had I not been so lazy. Maybe differentiate between reactions/force in members/loads with different color pens to make it easier to read. Method of joints is fun, just make sure that you actually write everything occurring at the joint. That's okay! Personally I like to redraw the unknown facing the right direction to make future calculations easier but that is completely up to you! When you start solving if you get a negative answer for an unknown it usually means you drew the unknown on your FBD facing the wrong way. Your unknowns can be in any direction (If you don't know, draw them in the positive direction, or in tension) just try and intuitively understand where the forces are acting to make it easier on yourself. When drawing the forces on your free body diagram draw your knowns in the proper directions. Get used to drawing them as you will use them like crazy. The next general tip is to draw Free Body Diagrams of everything. Definitely check out the topics you are really struggling on.
